Movie Review: Jesus Camp

Some time ago, Lisa came by for a visit, and she brought Jesus Camp on DVD. Jesus Camp is a documentary about evangelical Christians raising their children to be the "army of God." This is possibly the scariest movie I've ever seen. The film is peppered with speaking in tongues, prophesies, and prayers for bowling help, all done by ~10-year-old kids.

Overall, I give it 8.0 out of 10, and I encourage anyone interested in freedom of religion to see it.

  1. This is movie seems like it fits under the heading of Twain's definition of a classic: I want to have seen this movie, but I really don't want to see it. I honestly doubt I could sit through that much of that sort of vile lunacy without cringing myself to death.

  2. It is, as I said, horrifying to watch. However, it is very well done. I felt that the subject matter was treated pretty fairly; it didn't come off as an effort by atheists and liberals to bash Christians of all descriptions. In particular, the "voice of reason" in the film is a self-described Christian. You should certainly see it. Maybe you can get your bride to hold your hand.

  3. It's horrifying, but worth seeing, I think. I say watch it, even if you have to keep all the lights on for a week afterward. ;)

  4. I've watched a lot of that movie and similar documentaries on the internet, and they are truly eye opening. I wonder, though, how prevalent that degree of lunacy is. I've met several fairly orthodox evangelical Christians, and they're not crazy dumb hicks like those guys at all (just misguided imo).

while i appreciate that the makers of Jesus Camp let interviewees do all the talking, they were obviously selective about what they let into the final movie release; over all, there is some useful truth in this flick... as long as it's taken with a grain (or maybe a bucket) of salt
