A TV series can support at most one happy couple. More than that, and show degrades into schmaltz.

Hmm... I suppose Cordelia and Xander never really constituted a happy couple, so their coexistence with Willow and Oz (best TV couple EVAR!!1!) doesn't break the rule. Xander and Anya coexisted with Buffy and Riley and Willow and Tara, but again, I'm not sure if any but the last set qualify as "happy." Technically, Tyrol and Callie, Apollo and Dualla, and Starbuck and Anders were all happy couples at the same time, but they did kinda skip over the part where they were happy to focus on more misery and suffering.
