How-To: Mod a Nerf Revolver: Part 2

My last post demonstrated how to modify the Nerf Maverick revolver to let the cylinder swing all the way out and spin freely. This post will show you how to mod the "weapon" to shoot slightly farther.

First, disassemble the gun as a I described last time. Then pull the cylinder out. Pry off the orange plug pressed onto the end of the axle, which will allows you to pull the axle out.

The cylinder is made of two parts. Unscrew and remove the back part, and you will see the orange spikes onto which the darts, which are hollow, slide.

Pull the spikes out, and you will find a spring and flow limiter behind each one.

Discard all 6 of the flow limiters and 5 of the springs. Put the spikes back in place and reassemble the cylinder, but don't put it back on its axle yet. This omission of the limiters and the springs will allow more air to flow to the darts.

Slide the reserved spring onto the axle. Then slide on the cylinder. The spring will help keep the cylinder pressed up against the plunger mechanism, thus preventing air from escaping between the plunger mechanism and the cylinder.

Now reassemble the revolver and unleash your fury upon your spouse. Or on a smooth, flat surface. Your choice.

In our testing, Team Grondul found that a gun with the cylinder mod from the last post and the mod describe herein fired, on average, about 5 or 6 feet further than a gun with only the cylinder mod, when all 6 darts were discharged from each gun while it was held at an angle of about 30 degrees.

Thanks for the Part 1 tip. It worked awesome for me. I'm having trouble with Part 2. How do I pry off the orange plug? I've used plyers & a lot of force yet it won't come off.

    Thanks.

  2. I put a wide slotted screwdriver between the orange plug and the cylinder, then pried.

It seems way too flimsy when I try to pry.

  4. I'm not sure what to tell you. Choose your screwdriver carefully and be careful about where you place it. Good luck.

part 2 makes part 1 fail, the spring on the axle causes the axle to push into a small hole in the front even when you unlock it, I have to spend a whole 2 minutes to pop it out.

Thank you for this. I had a cylinder that wasn't firing (in the toy, in the toy...!) and removing the limiter fixed the problem.

Now I'm even more glad I paid that dollar for the Maverick. (go, Goodwill!)

Thanks for giving me the confidence to pry off the orange plug. Maybe you're getting so much traffic from this because of the clear explanation and great pictures.

I followed this mod to a "T" and the only thing that happened is that I was left with an extra spring from the slide (where the hell does that go!?) and now my Mav shoots slower and shorter than before.

"part 2 makes part 1 fail"

I had this trouble as well. The front of the cylinder was getting stuck on the front part of the gun frame. This was easily resolved by taking a knife and scraping away at the plastic that it gets caught on. It will make you chamber jostle around a bit, but it will still fire fine.

hey people! just wondering.... Would you guys know how to fix a SuperMAXX 3000 (blue edition)

are these the only two mods available for this gun? thanks.

  14. These are the only two that I am aware of, other than purely aesthetic mods, such as painting. You may find some others elsewhere on the internet.

I took out the Ar's and it shoots better.Every now and then a shot will just go like five feet but it seems to happen everynow and then. The microsonic darts travel better than the stock darts for me.

I had the problem were the cylinder would not pop out for the reload but that was because the orange plug had not been put back on properly. (try a hammer)

You can also take off the stick thats connected to the plug. This makes the dart go even ferther.

My maverick works great after this, shoots 4 to 5 feet further and if you add 2 pennies to the back of the main propulsion spring [big spring] it shoots a little more powerful, don't add more then 2 pennies though 3 is overkill. Now I just need to paint it and extend the barrel a little. xD Also don't dry fire the gun often as it eventually will fuck it up.

in the yellow mav, the plug is black.

Hey Skeeler, i got a mav for christmas and need to know if this is 100% guaranteed to work, coz judging by the othe comments there are glitches, do you think i should just leave mine how it is??????

and by da way lovin your pics, have you seen the n strike vulcan, 3 bullets a second lol no need to mod that

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well, few things in life are guaranteed. However, I will say that the first modification I presented is quite easy for anyone with any mechanical aptitude:

    http://industrialstrengthscience.blogspot.com/2007/09/how-to-mod-nerf-revolver-part-1.html

I'd suggest you try that one first. If you manage to put your Mav back together and the mod works as advertised, then think about doing the second one.

  24. Hmmm
When I did this mod and removed all the air inhibitors, I reassembled the gun and everything appeared to work correctly, except that when I pulled the trigger, darts did not come out!!
The barrel is rotating correctly, but nothing is firing. Any ideas?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Check that the main spring and plunger are assembled correctly.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh, figured it out.
It turns out you actually have to put the air compressing canister and the revolver cartridge back in correctly :)
Works now! I removed the air inhibitors and the springs, and added 4 pennies.

I TRIED THIS AND MY MAVERICK EXPLODED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. That's troubling. Perhaps if you had used fewer exclamation points, that wouldn't have happened.

  29. Hey skeeler! A lot of people's questions have gone unanswered. You could put there name and then answer them, to make it easier. For example,
    Shnowman, (ANSWER TO QUESTION)
So now you don't have to only answer the last question on this forum.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh! My question is, there is an orange piece on both sides of the cylinder. Which one do I pry out?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Based on the first photo in this post, it looks like I pried off the orange plug at the back of the cylinder, but I believe you can remove whichever is easier for you. The point is to be able to remove the cylinder from its spindle so you can open it.

Are you missing the stock spring on the barrel axle when you added the reserved spring and put the gun back together? (pic 4, last pic)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anonymous2:15 PM

an easy way to get the orange thingy off,use a crowbar, not for prying either!

  34. Anonymous1:30 AM

sleeker I tried this mod and when I put it back together no air would come out
i opened it up and everything looks fine but nothings firing please help

sorry bout the name mix up typed too fast

  36. Anonymous1:54 PM

by the way I have the first mod too if that does anything

    ReplyDelete
  37. you fail at mechanics sir. i did this and none of the barrels fired. then i dismantled and figured that the spikes/spring/"inhibitor"(its not an inhibitor, that piece is what actually pushes the dart) is really a piston system. the darts are not fired fluidly (by the air), but rather mechanically (by the pusher in the piston). a good way to make the gun stronger would to make the opening at the slide piston (not the ones in the barrel, the big one at the back of the gun) smaller so there is more air pressure going through the smaller hole.

worked awesome somewhat tricky to make sure everything is in its right spot and carlos it does work as long as you make sure everything is back in its slot (yes every part is slotted to make it idiot proof so to speak)

  39. I can't believe this page exists! It's excellent. I'm planning to mod my Maverick asap, so thanks for the clues!!

Stretch the spring for loads of power. But, its a bastard to put back together.

I didnt put the spikes back in because they still restrict air flow.

My problem is ... My gun no longer fires. (All the spikes to is help the darts not fall out).

this mod is really good. i would go to nerfhaven.com to see more awesome mods for the maverick. dont spray paint this gun though. the paint eats away the plastic. you can buy special paint for plastic though.

Ok I'm confused. Will both mods work together if done correctly ?
And What are the common problems of modding it twice ?

    ReplyDelete
  43. These two mods are independent. I did them both to the same gun.; it works fine for me.
