In a continuation of the recent trend of making computer/video games into motion pictures,* Warner Brothers' Legendary Pictures will develop a film based on World of Warcraft, the massively popular MMORPG. Do any of the gaming geeks in our regular audience---you know who you are---care to comment?
* See also Doom, Bloodrayne, Halo, and probably a few I've forgotten.

I just don't see it. LotR pretty much covered all we really need in the "Elves and Swords" genre of movies for the next few years, and while that sort of stuff is fun to play (I'm 50+ hours into "Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion," after all), it's going to look tired as hell on the big screen. Given WoW's overexposure in the game press the last few years, it's getting to look pretty tired in every medium.
ReplyDeleteI think the real element at work here is that, in general, game-movie crossovers suck, even when the source material is great in its home genre. For example, no one needs a "Grand Theft Auto" movie, we have "Goodfellas" and "Scarface" and, err... "Miami Vice." The aesthetic and thematic requirements of the two media are just too different, and I wish Hollywood would just abandon the whole dang idea.
And someone just needs to smack Uwe Boll until he stops making movies.
